During the NCT Europe 2017 event in Sonthofen, Germany, which took place from the 27th of June until the 29th of June, military, government and industry stakeholders had a unique chance to exchange thoughts and ideas with Syrian experts. The audience was honored by the presence of: Mr. Abdul Elah Fahed, former Secretary General of the National Coalition of Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces, His Excellency Dr. Nizar Al Haraki, Ambassador to Qatar on behalf of the Coalition and Dr. Houssam Alnahhas, Coordinator for the CBRN Taskforce at the Union of Medical Care and Relief Organizations (UOSSM), who joined us via a skype connection.
Two issues were identified and discussed. First Mr. Fahed appealed to the audience that “the inaction of the international community” poses a great challenge in getting rid of chemical weapons, which are clearly still being used.1 The Coalition’s Ambassador to Qatar, Nizar Haraki, stressed that the international community must set accountability for the use of these weapons as a top priority, adding that the repeated use of this type of warfare by the Assad regime poses a serious threat to international peace and security.2
The second issue that was highlighted by Dr. Houssam Alnahhas was the severe lack of necessary equipment and medical professionals to treat patients. Civil responders cannot keep up with the pace of bombs dropping on targets in civilian areas. Treating patients becomes even harder with the continued use of chemical weapons such as last April of this year, when the town of Khan Sheikoun was bombed with sarin, killing more than eighty people. In the meantime, the fight against ISIS has led the Syrian Army to advance on Deir al-Zor. Simultaneously, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces have taken about most of the city of Raqqa and are nearing key infrastructure used by Islamic State.3
The CBRNe Society will again give you the opportunity to discuss chemical warfare, C-IED and EOD at NCT USA 2017 with experts such as: Mr. Raed Saleh, Chief of the Syrian Civil Defense (White Helmets), Dr. Houssam Alnahhas, Coordinator for the CBRN Taskforce at the Union of Medical Care and Relief Organizations (UOSSM), Dr. Mohamed Nazir Alhakim, Secretary General of the National Coalition of Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces and His Excellency Dr. Nizar Al Haraki, Ambassador to Qatar on behalf of the Coalition. Join us now to contribute to the discussions and see what can be done to relief some of the suffering of the Syrian people!
