Belgium Faces Winter Blackouts as Aging Nuclear Plants Falter

Belgium is bracing for power shortages this winter as the nation grapples with extended outages at its aging fleet of nuclear reactors.

Plan A, according to Energy Minister Marie-Christine Marghem, is to ask neighboring France, Germany and the Netherlands to send electricity through cross-border cables. It may also be possible to contract a gas-fired plant in Vilvoorde, just outside of Brussels, to help ease the supply deficit, she said Monday, according to news agency Belga.
