Diseases such as Ebola and Lassa fever are highly contagious and life-threatening. Three years ago more than 11,000 people died of Ebola in West Africa. There is a high risk of new epidemics in the region.
Bad news has come from Nigeria to begin the year: The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported five new cases of Lassa fever. A 15-year-old boy has died.
